Master’s in Arts/Science Student

I am looking for a bright and curious mind to join my lab beginning Fall 2024. Possible projects include:

  • Examining planning processes for implementing green infrastructure practices across 19 cities

  • Exploring green infrastructure planning practices in Charlotte and their relationship to property development and/or transportation investments

  • Assessing resident perspectives of green space and green infrastructure in Charlotte or other cities.

Interested students should email Dr. Hoover to discuss research interests, and provide a CV, statement of interest and names for two references.

Responsibilities vary by project but may include the following:

  • Attending weekly to bi-weekly meetings with Dr. Hoover

  • Collection and data cleaning of city planning documents, development and contracting records

  • Document and content analysis

  • Possible community engagement with residents in the Charlotte community

  • Survey design and survey implementation in Charlotte and other cities.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • A Completed BA or BS by Fall 2024 and admission into the Geography and Earth Sciences MS/MA program.

  • Background or strong interest in environmental studies, sciences, planning, green space and/or environmental justice.

  • Ability to work independently with scheduled check-ins. Prior writing and research experience preferred but not required.

  • Experience and/or interest in qualitative coding software such as NVivo, Dedoose or Atlas.TI

  • Experience and/or interest in software coding language R, tidyverse and plotly

Compensation

  • This is a two-year, 9-month contract for 20 hours per week at $7,800 per year. Additional summer funding contingent upon available monies and performance (~$4,000 per summer).

Summer Undergraduate Assistant

I am looking for a bright and curious mind interested in summer research for 2024. Possible projects entail:

  • Examining attitudes and experiences with trees in Charlotte, NC.

  • Assessing resident perspectives of green space and green infrastructure in Charlotte or other cities.

Interested students should email Dr. Hoover for details.

Possible Responsibilities Include

  • Attending weekly meetings with Dr. Hoover

  • Document and content analysis

  • Survey design

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • A background or strong interest in environmental studies, sciences, and/or environmental justice.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Strong writing skills preferred but not required.

  • Experience and/or interest in qualitative coding software such as NVivo, Dedoose or Atlas.TI

  • Experience and/or interest in talking to people and initiating conversations with strangers
